If you’ve ever tried knitting something wide while travelling on a train or bus, you’ll know that there’s a problem. Having spent years travelling with my Mother, a knitting addict, I know that it isn’t fun to sit next to a knitter, the elbows are really far too active.
So, when I decided to try knitting myself, I worried about knitting during the daily commute to my sunless office pod. Would I become a nuisance to fellow passengers?
I needn’t have worried. The delightful lady in the wool shop who got me started had given me the right equipment. Armed with a set of circular needles I found my knitting footprint was perfectly acceptable. I can knit wide or narrow pieces without digging my elbows into the people on either side and because the weight of the knitting is taken up by the flexible cable between the circular needles, my arms and hands don’t get so tired supporting the weight. Not a problem I know with a lacy scarf, but when you’re knitting a thick sweater the weight can be considerable.
So for everyone who knits and commutes, consider the friendly solution, use circular knitting needles.
